At The American Legion Auxiliary Department Convention, Unit 13 became
the first in a long time to have three Department officers elected from
our ranks. Jasmine Roberts was elected Honorary Junior Secretary and
Jessica Roberts was elected Honorary Junior Sgt.-at-Arms. They were installed
on Sunday morning, along with the Senior officers. Our Unit president
of the last 9 years, Kathee Coughlin, ran unopposed for Vice President,
which puts her in line to be elected President for 2008-2009. She will
be the third Unit 13 member elected to this high office, following Jane
Fleetwood and Mary Marshall.
We also received a Certificate of Appreciation for the "Best National
Security Report for District 2". Other awards presented at Installation
will be note next month.
Girls State Report: Unit 13 is proud to have 3 members on staff for this
summer's session, June 14-22. Leslie Kitching served her 7th year as
director, Patti May was a Government Advisor for the fifth year, and
Kathee Coughlin served her first full-time year as a City Advisor, after
helping for the past 17 years at night and on weekends. It was dubbed
the "Lucky Duck Session" by Director Kitching with several
significant "bumps', including one staff with 3 broken ribs and
Kathee making it on crutches 2 1/2 weeks after knee surgery. The staff
reported in on the 12th for instruction and to set up their areas. Three
hundred girls arrived on Thursday, the 14th, and were immediately immersed
in the governmental process by holding City Elections that night. Party
caucuses were held, platforms were developed, and campaigns for the "big
offices' of the "State of Seminole" began in earnest. If you
have time to listen, Kathee will be happy to brag the the CFO, President
Pro-Tempore of the Senate and one of the five winners of the 2+2 scholarship
(2 years at TCC and 2 years at FSU) were from her city of Immokalee.
Unit 13 ended up with 3 girls who will report at the traditional meeting
on Sept. 27th, along with the Boys Staters.
Upcoming Meetings: Executive Committee @ 6:00 pm on Aug. 9, Sept. 13; General
Membership Meetings @ 6:30 pm on Aug. 9, Sept. 13; Social @ 7:00 pm on Aug. 23,
Sept. 27 (Annual Girls and Boys State Dinner); please bring salads or desserts.
If you need a ride, please call another member or an officer so we can help.
We are still in need of volunteers to start learning about and working the programs
and chairs. Department Workshop will be Aug. 18-19 at HQ in Orlando, in which
all programs and the Plan of Work for the upcoming year will be reviewed. Call
Kathee or Pat for info.
Our thoughts and payers go out to Past President Marie Harris for a speedy resolution
of her health issues. We also send out love and prayers to long-time member Beth
Arnold during her battle with cancer. Patti May and her family lost her mother-in-law
during the Girls State session, and the Executive Committee took care of dinner
the night after the service.
Our Homeless Veterans Project is in full gear. As a result of the collaboration
between our Chaplain Sandra Shaffer and Denna Green-Corbett, the Homeless Coordinator
at the VA Clinic, we now have 22 non-homeless vets! If you know someone with
apartments willing to work with the program, if you're will to "adopt a
vet", or household items willing to donate to the program, please call Denna
at .
Special thanks to ALL who helped with the many activities of June 23-24: Pat
Stallings, Carolyn Losey, Sandra Shaffer, Penny Stansbury, Carol Easom, Juanita
LeCroy, Lois Hanna, Sharon Courey and Jeanette May (waiting for Dad's DD214).
I received numerous compliments from the other members of District 2, the Boys
State staff (and their wives) and Boys Staters for the hospitality.
District 2 held the Constitutional Conference on Sat., June 23, at the Hooch.
Eula Mae Segrest was elected District President for 2007-08. She is still in
need of Chairmen.
Coupon Project: Military Commissaries will allow our troops and their families
to use coupons up to six month our of date. Please bring the coupons from your
Sunday papers or other circulars to the Post marked "Auxiliary Project" and
Penny Stansbury will clip them and send them to the appropriate bases. She can
also use extra YARN for comfort articles for the troops, especially skull caps
to go under the helmets.
If you have Juniors, (not eighteen before June 30, 2008), please call Pat or
Kathee. We're continuing to expand the activities for our younger members and
will meet in Aug. or Sept. to elect officers and work on our patch activities.
We would like them to be at least 6 to handle some of the activities.
DUES NOTICES for 2007-2008 are sent from National in September,
January and March.
If you have not paid yours for 2006-2007, you are 'delinquent" and could
jeopardize your benefits. Please send to Pat at P. O. Box 735, Woodville 32362
ASAP so we can process the appropriate paperwork. The Department Headquarters
of the American Legion Auxiliary is very firm about the procedures that must
be followed in processing an
application for new membership
or transfer. Please respect the fact that Pat Stallings, our elected Membership
Vice President, has attended over a dozen hours of training over the past several
years to stay up-to-date on the requirements. She also e-mails and calls HQ
if there is any question so that the prospective member and the Unit
will not be
embarrassed by improper paperwork.
